When fixed assets are misappropriated, they are either stolen or used for purposes other than what they were designated for.  (This includes not only misuse but also overuse.)  The misuse (or overuse) of an asset can damage it or reduce its useful lifecycle.

A good fixed asset management program, even combined with a preventative maintenance program, can help ensure assets are utilized to the fullest extent of their useful lives, and perhaps even beyond.
